Baptism (continued)

Question: What if a person was never baptized, or was only sprinkled? Does that mean he isn't saved?
No one has the authority to answer that question. It is not our place to decide whom God saves. However, we do believe from Scripture that baptism is essential for the assurance of salvation. We are not promised eternal life without it. The only way we can be sure we have followed Go d's plan is to be immersed in the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit as a symbol both of cleansing and burial.

Question: If baptism is essential for the assurance of salvation, doesn't that make it a 'work' to earn salvation?
Definitely not. The only way we could earn salvation is if we could do something for God that is of equal value to what He has done for us. We would have to be able to compensate Him fairly for His gift. We cannot possible do that. Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Universe, came to earth to be abused and crucified in order to save us from our sins. There is no way that being immersed under water is an equivalent compensation for that kind of gift! We are not earning anything! Salvation is a free gift. But as any gift we are offered can either be accepted or rejected, salvation is our choice.
Furthermore, when a gift is offered to us, we must take it, unwrap it, and put it to use if it is going to have any impact in our lives. Salvation must likewise be accepted. We do that through faith, repentance, confession and baptism. Those things are not to earn what God has made available but to express our acceptance of it.

Question: Should a baby be baptized?
Some churches teach that babies are born sinful. The babies are actually guilty upon arrival and must be baptized to erase that mark of sin. Our understanding of Scripture is that babies are born with a sinful nature. In other words, once they are old enough to understand right from wrong, they will choose wrong sometimes. However, we do not believe they are born already guilty of sin. In fact, Jesus suggests just the opposite in Matthew 18:3, when He said, 'unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." We believe babies are innocent, as children mare and begin to understand their need for salvation, they need to accept Jesus Christ for themselves.
Furthermore, the New Testament patters was 'believer baptism.' Mark 16:16 suggests that belief is to precede baptism and Acts 2:38 says that we repent before we are baptized. Infant baptism simply was not prescribed in the Bible.
